ABSTRACT: Pediatricians can help guide the families of children with an autism spectrum disorder through the maze of interventions, toward the goal of optimizing these children's potential for a productive, independent, brighter future. This requires an awareness of local resources, smart use of published information, partnership with educational and therapeutic agencies as well as families, and the willingness to be an advocate and provide a medical home. Keeping track of their child's progress in school and knowing when to engage health insurance and Medicaid can also benefit these families. Connecting families to regional institutions' training programs may help reduce the cost of researchbased interventions.

While playing on the school playground, a 10-year-old boy decided to try a zip line (Figure 1). He grabbed the pulley and slid down the cable. When the pulley came to a stop, he fell off and sustained a right ankle injury. In the emergency department (ED), the diagnosis was a right distal fibula shaft fracture and distal/medial Salter-Harris type II tibia fracture.

The areas of hypopigmentation on this 4-month-old girl are sequelae of eczema. The rash had developed on the infant's upper extremities in the bilateral antecubital and popliteal fossae at 1 month of age.

A 7-month-old boy with a history of severe atopic dermatitis and asthma was brought for evaluation of a generalized rash, fever, and irritability of 2 days' duration. He had no respiratory symptoms. His medical history was significant for anorexia, without vomiting or diarrhea. He had a strong family history of allergy.
